The Guelder-rose (Viburnum opulus),  is a deciduous shrub that boasts beautiful clusters of flowers, vibrant berries, and striking foliage. It typically grows to a height of 10-15 feet, with a spread of 8-12 feet. The plant’s deep green, maple-like leaves provide a lush backdrop to its other show-stopping features. During late spring and early summer, the shrub becomes adorned with large, flat-topped clusters of creamy white flowers, attracting bees and other pollinators. These blossoms eventually give way to translucent, bright red berries that ripen in the autumn, adding a pop of colour to the landscape.

The Guelder-rose has a rich cultural history, particularly in Europe, where it has symbolized both beauty and medicine. It is believed that the plant derived its name from the Dutch province of Gelderland, where it was once abundant. Folklore associated with the shrub includes tales of love, fertility, and protection against evil spirits.
